Sky High

Sky high or Sky fall?

The sky can prompt a wide range of feelings and moods. The brilliance of a clear day – to the sombre tones of an overcast one, is a mirror of the kaleidoscope of human nature.

Music inspired by a stormy sky can sound like turmoil or conflict, using dynamic and dissonant elements to convey tension. On the other hand, a composition inspired by a serene, open sky might sound peaceful and harmonious. A lullaby rather than a hullabaloo..

This week, we explore both sides of the musical sky..

Best of 2024 So Far

In 2024, in just a few weeks, amidst the sea of mainstream hits, several alternative and unrecognized songs have clambered out of the slippery-sided well of formulaic people-pleasers, to ear worm their way into my consciousness and car pod listening. These songs, for the most part ignored, showcase the depth and diversity of talent within the alternative music scene happening all around us right now. Ex Coral member Bill Ryder-Jones has produced the album of the year so far in Lechyd Da and is playing at The Chalk in Brighton this Tuesday. I’ll be there..

The Healer

Music can heal us – physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Certain melodies, rhythms, and lyrics can evoke strong feelings and memories, a kind of audio catharsis.
It can calm the body and the mind – lowering heart rate, reducing blood pressure, and cutting levels of stress hormones like cortisol.
Music therapy can help manage pain, improve motor skills, and enhance rehabilitation.
We just need to be in tune with it..

Dear God

Knowing that God is out there is strangely comforting. It means that we are not just uber-animals trying to be the fittest to survive. It makes sense of our endless search for love and purpose and our quest for knowledge.

C.S. Lewis once said, “We are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists.” The arts are often the place where we come closest to communicating on an astral plane. Musicians have asked the deepest questions in music since the first beat of a drum when God sat at the fireside with them..

Let’s see what they have found.

The Whole Nine Yards Ep 159 11.2.24 ‘You’d forget you were dreaming’ with Roy Stannard on Mid Sussex Radio 103.8FM

I wonder, I wonder – a radio show inspired by the British philosopher Alan Watts and the segment of his lecture ‘Inception’.

The Whole Nine Yards Ep 155 11.2.24 with Roy Stannard on Mid Sussex Radio 103.8FM

You’d forget you were dreaming..

Is there an internal irony to a Cruise company using a talk that was about humanity enjoying what it already has?
Alan Watts contention was:
Point One: Your life is the only life you will ever live and therefore the best possible life, as long as you appreciate it for the incredible experience it is.
Point Two: All the things you dream for would only bring short-term happiness, not a lifetime of happiness.

The irony consists of hijacking a profound piece of philosophy to sell cruises.

The same Alan Watts talk was used by Microsoft for the ad for the Xbox Series X, but they preserved the ending – about ending up right where you are now.
It would be more appropriate to use the line about “the dream of living the life you are living today” and zoomed in on the face of someone staring into the sunset from the prow of the ship.

Iused to be an advertising copywriter, so this is home territory. It stirred me sufficiently to compile a show on the theme of dreaming.

Why can’t We live together?

Yesterday was Armistice Day. The 11th minute of 11th day of the 11th month. The day when the mass slaughter of 8 and a half million soldiers and 13 million civilians ended.  The WW1 poets Rupert Graves, Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen observed, lamented and died during and after the war to end all wars. Except war didn’t end. Today, on this day of remembrance, I will let the music and words and speak for themselves. Honouring the dead, recognising the sacrifice and most of all, asking why is it happening again?

Dreams escaping from Towers

The castle or fortress tower metaphor gives us a powerful symbol for the ways in which human ambition can be confined by fear. It reminds us of the importance of breaking free from self-imposed barriers and embracing the unknown in order to break out our ambitions and invade our full potential.

Carried by the Wind

Throughout the globe, both wind and our words can either connect people or send them fleeing for physical or emotional safety. They can comfort or devastate.
